In order to encourage and revive the waning practice of handwriting among students, the Youth Welfare Department, Panjab University, Chandigarh, has made handwriting competition a part of the zonal and inter-zonal youth festivals from the current session.

Earlier the department had been conducting it as an independent exclusive competition for all affiliated/constituent colleges, regional centres and departments of Panjab University (PU). Noticing the overwhelming response and with a view to encouraging it further, it has been made a part of the fest.

Nirmal Jaura, director, Youth Welfare Department, PU, said: “Earlier, the competition was not a part of the festival and we organised it in phases by shortlisting students from among thousands who participated in the initial stage. As we discovered that there are more students who are keen to exhibit their handwriting skills, we made it a part of the festival to give it a boost. The growing trend of typing among students has proved to be destructive as far as the correct usage of any language is concerned. Most students have gotten so used to slangs that they have begun to doubt even the correct language.”

“I am especially thankful to Vice-Chancellor Raj Kumar and all colleges and institutions, who have given me due support in my endeavour to the extent that we have now made it a part of festival as well,” Jaura added.

Kuldip Dhaliwal, principal of the Mata Ganga Khalsa College for Girls, Manji Sahib Kottan, will host the zonal youth festival for colleges of Ludhiana Zone-A this year. She said: “Students do not wish to hold a pen or spare an effort to write anything. They just have peripheral knowledge of words and spellings and have become least bothered as technology has simplified everything for them. This is indeed a good step by the department.”

Kuldip Singh, principal, Panjab University Constituent College, Nihal Singh Wala (Moga), said: “The mobile language has destroyed the correctness and purity of language. Using Internet slangs has almost become a compulsion, especially for the youth. These slangs speak of carelessness on the part of the user and indicate their indifference for their language. This is indeed a grand effort on the part of the university.”

“Correct writing should be advocated at all costs or we will have to repent for our own doings later. Such competitions are sure to renew the interest of students, as they may steadily begin to exercise writing by hand,” said Narinder Singh Sidhu, principal of GNN College, Doraha.
