Chandigarh, August 21
The agenda of doubling paid parking rates and increasing more paid parking lots will be tabled in the MC House meeting in September.
Earlier, the agenda item was either deferred or not taken up in the House meetings as local MP Kirron Kher was busy attending the parliament session at that time. Kher and some councillors wanted that they also present their views and discuss the matter in the House before it is finalised.
No agenda will be taken up in the next meeting, which is scheduled to be held on August 30, as Punjab Governor and UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore is slated to address the House on that day. This will be for the second time that he will address the House. The first time he addressed was in January last year.
Mayor Rajesh Kalia had formed a committee, which is headed by former Mayor Arun Sood, to recommend parking rates and the terms and conditions for the allotment of parking lots.
The MC has proposed to convert about 30 free parking areas into paid facilities, besides enhancing the parking fee. The new paid parking lots had been identified in Sectors 7, 19, 22, 23, 24, 36 and on Madhya Marg.
The MC has proposed to charge Rs 10 for two-wheelers and Rs 20 for four-wheelers, which will be doubled after four hours. At present, the corporation is running all parking lots on its own at old rates till these are allotted to new firms.
