Family disputes are becoming the reason for a majority of suicides in the district. For instance, in less than a week, three such incidents have taken place in the district.

A resident of Bhallaiana village, who was in his mid-thirties, allegedly committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance on Friday.

Jaswinder Kaur, the mother of the deceased, Lakhvir Singh, has lodged a complaint with the police, alleging that her son had got married about seven years ago, but for the past about one year her daughter-in-law Sandeep Kaur was living with her parents.

“My son was under depression as my daughter-in-law’s brothers used to threaten him. Hence, he took the extreme step on Friday morning by consuming some poisonous substance,” she stated in the complaint.

The Kotbhai police have registered a case against Sandeep Kaur, Raja Singh, Lovely and Samitri. The suspects are yet to be arrested.

In another case, a resident of Ballamgarh village here allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday by consuming some poisonous substance after his father refused to transfer the ownership of land on his name. Deceased Gurbaj Singh’s son Sukhvir Singh lodged a complaint with the police, alleging that his father was demanding the ownership rights of the land coming into his share, but his grandfather Darshan Singh always refused the same.

“My grandfather along with others had even thrashed my father over the issue. Hence, he took the extreme step on August 14,” he stated in his complaint.

The Muktsar (Sadar) police have booked Darshan Singh, Gurmeet Singh, Jasveer Singh, Jaskaran Singh, all residents of Ballamgarh village, under Section 306 of the IPC. No arrest has been made in the case.

On Friday, a 27-year-old youth of Malout town, who was married about two years ago, allegedly committed suicide. The deceased, Vikram Singh, was working as a security guard with a private company. His father Krishan Singh alleged: “My daughter-in-law had aborted the foetus some time ago. However, when my son objected to it, she started living with her parents. She even threatened us to lodge a false case. My son went into depression. Later, her brothers demanded money from him to reach a compromise. Thus, he took the extreme step.”
