The District Collector of Bhilwara has issued an order to all government offices that visitors and employees be served only ‘half-a-glass of water’ to check its wastage.

Rajendra Bhatt who issued the order on Independence Day to all DLOs (district-level officers) for further communication to BDOs and Gram Panchayats also appealed to public to save water by offering half-a-glass to guests and even a member of family who asks for it.

“The water-scarce district famous for its textile industry is still one of the dried out with the lowest water table region in the state. The administration is supplying 556 tankers per day to far-flung areas for human consumption,” the Collector told The Tribune on Sunday.

Despite good rain this season, the water table was still very low and may rise a little. When visitors in office or in house are offered a glass of water many times they drink half of it… the left over water cannot be poured back into an earthen pot or water cooler, he said.

“The order is being implemented in most of the offices in Bhilwara and adjoining offices on August 16-17. If the visitor asks for more water he should be given but its rampant misuse should be avoided at all costs,” Bhatt said while defending the order.

Chambal river water supply extended to the parched region is now restricted to Bhilwara city only, thus people are not serious about water conservation even as the rest of Bhilwara district was still in dire need of regular water supply, he warned.
