Gujarat Patidar leader Hardik Patel along with two Congress MLAs were among those taken into preventive custody today when they were going to meet Narendra Modi-critic former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt in the Palanpur sub-jail. They were later released by the police.

Hardik and the Congress MLAs, Mahesh Patel representing Palanpur constituency and Kirit Patel of Patan, were leading a group of people, including some 200 women, to call on Bhatt who was currently serving a life imprisonment sentence in Palanpur sub-jail in connection with a 28-year old case of custodial death of a BJP activist.

Hardik said the women members were going to tie rakhi on Bhatt. The police refused the group permission to meet Bhatt and detained 28 persons before they entered Palanpur city. The women members in the group were allowed to enter the city but were not permitted to enter the jail premises. Only Bhatt’s wife Shweta Bhatt, who had contested against Modi as a Congress candidate in the 2012 Assembly elections, was allowed to meet her husband.

The police, however, refused to give any reason for disallowing permission to the group to call on Bhatt.
