Barring “localised incidents” in the Valley, the situation in Jammu and Kashmir remained calm today with arrangements made to celebrate Independence Day in all districts. The restrictions, totally lifted in Jammu, will remain in force in Kashmir for some time, officials said.

The main Independence Day function will be held at SK Stadium with Governor Satya Pal Malik hoisting the national flag, Principal Secretary Rohit Kansal said. He said prohibitory orders had been further relaxed  in a large number of areas, including Srinagar.

Additional Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police Munir Khan said: “Restrictions imposed in Jammu have been completely removed and schools and other establishments there have resumed functioning. Restrictions will continue at some places in Kashmir for a while.”

He said a few with pellet injuries had been treated. “Our main endeavour is to ensure there is no civilian casualty,” he said. — PTI
