Jalandhar, August 10

City-based Patel Hospital, in collaboration with Fortis Hospital, Delhi, has launched the super-speciality OPD sessions for liver patients.

The sessions would be conducted on second Friday of every month. Notably, it is for the first time that any such OPD, comprising combined hepatology and liver transplant, has been introduced in the region, stated experts at the hospital.

Dr Varun Gupta, who has wide experience in pre-transplant and post-transplant care of liver patients, will examine the patients during the OPD sessions.

“In the course of time, patients develop cirrhosis with ascites, jaundice, encephalopathy or liver cancer. At this stage, the only definitive treatment feasible is liver transplant. Liver can be taken from either a living or cadaveric donor. Doctors and patients are unaware about the success and feasibility of transplant in our society. The success rate has improved and the life expectancy has increased significantly in patients who undergo liver transplant. — TNS
