Ludhiana: Two students of the department of zoology have bagged second and third prize in a poster presentation at the national seminar on ‘Biodiversity: Issues, challenges and opportunities’, held at the CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, Haryana. Manpreet Kaur secured second position for the poster titled ‘Bird species observed in relation to exotic trees in Ludhiana’, while Kiran Rani stood third for the poster titled ‘To study the acceptance and anti-fertility effect of calotropis procera in bandicota benglensis’.

Convocation on July 24

Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) will hold its Annual convocation on July 24 in the Pal Auditorium. VP Singh Badnore, Governor of Punjab and Chancellor of PAU, will be the chief guest. Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor of the university, will preside over the convocation. A total of 498 students, who passed out during the session 2017-18, will receive their degrees. Besides, 26 gold medalists, seven PAU scientists will be awarded citations on the occasion.

Student felicitated

Eajaz Ahmed Dar, student of the department of agronomy has been conferred with the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for his postgraduate doctoral thesis research in agricultural and allied sciences 2018– natural resource management. The award was bestowed on him during the ICAR foundation day and award ceremony, held in New Delhi on July 16. Ajmer Singh Brar, senior agronomist and Eajaz’s major adviser, said Eajaz worked on ‘simulating the impact of climate and irrigation schedule on performance of drip irrigated wheat’, which he submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, in the subject of agronomy.

Training on flower cultivation

A total of 35 farmers and farm women from Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh, participated in a five-day training course on flower cultivation, organised at the skill development centre of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). TS Riar, associate director (Skill Development), said the skill centre aimed at honing the skills of farmers, farm women and rural youth in agriculture and allied enterprises, to enabling them to become self-employed. KK Dhatt, head of the Department of Floriculture and Landscaping explained the successful cultivation of various flowers.— TNS
