A panel of Panjab University, constituted for deciding the fate of the university’s 47-year-old South India Coffee House which was shut down on June 31 after its owner Joy Kuruvilla refused to run it, today called for floating a tender to appoint a new contractor for the shop.

The panel was swinging between two options — whether to run the shop through the University Institute of Hotel Management or to lease out the shop to another contractor. A sub-committee was also formed to look into the deciding terms and conditions of the contract, the food menu and the rate card.

A source from the committee shared: “The University Institute of Hotel Management backed out from the deal because they believed that it would be difficult to run the shop by the students and faculty. They announced their decision in the meeting today.”

Another source confirmed that a new contractor would be hired to run the shop. “A tender will be floated by the Registrar of the university soon. It has been decided that the contractor will run the shop while keeping its traditional South Indian cuisine in mind.”
