While the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) directs the affiliated schools to update their official website timely, its own website has been crying for attention for a long time now.

The data regarding the number of schools affiliated to the board, as mentioned in ‘Annual Report 2018-19’ that has been uploaded on the website, is reportedly erroneous.

Going by the board’s annual report, as on March 31, 2019, Chandigarh has a total of 99 government schools and 59 private schools affiliated to the CBSE. A total of 165 schools have been listed in the annual report as against the 184 affiliated schools — there are 114 government schools and 70 private schools in the city that are currently affiliated to the board.

Expired affiliation

The affiliation record on the CBSE official website is apparently not updated. The website still displays expired affiliation status of more than 60 schools in the city. The affiliation status of some schools has not been updated since 2008.

The schools that have been granted regular affiliation to the CBSE are required to remit the annual fee to the board of an amount prescribed from time to time. The annual fee is being deposited, along with the examination fee. A few months ago, when the District Education Officer sought explanation from schools regarding the expired affiliation, it came to the fore that some government schools had paid the affiliation fee up to March 2020, however, the board had not updated their affiliation status on the website.

Meanwhile, District Education Officer Anujit Kaur said: “The affiliation record on the board’s website is not updated.”

One of the main functions of the CBSE is to affiliate schools for secondary and senior secondary school examination. The schools are granted affiliation as per the CBSE affiliation by-laws.
