Shimla, July 21

The Himachal Pradesh University on Sunday revoked the suspension of nine students within 48 hours as Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur will visit the university to attend its golden jubilee celebrations slated for tomorrow.

The suspension of nine students affiliated to the ABVP for staging “dharna” on the campus on July 11 in support of their demands, defying the ban on demonstrations, had evoked vehement protests and the demand for revoking the suspension was getting louder and the administration and the university authorities were apprehending a showdown.

However, the adversaries of the Vice-Chancellor dubbed the suspension as a “drama” and eyebrows are now being raised on the timing of the action taken by the university, as the suspension orders could have been issued after the golden jubilee function and commotion on the campus could have been avoided.

“The university has killed two birds with one stone. It not only countered the charge that the VC was soft towards the ABVP, but also projected the ABVP as an organisation, capable of fighting for the rights of students, irrespective of which party is in power and this would pay dividends in the SCA election,” said a senior teacher.

Had the students been suspended after the function, the period of suspension would have been longer, as there would have been no pressure to revoke the suspension immediately but the selection of “timing” was a master stroke, he added.
