“To check accidents on the Zirakpur-Ambala highway, a number of unauthorised accesses from the NH to several establishments have to be plugged,” said Girish Dayalan, Mohali Deputy Commissioner, here.

The Deputy Commissioner, along with a team of senior officials of the local administration, today again checked vulnerable points on the highway during his visit to Zirakpur and Dera Bassi.

“There are a number of such accesses. I have asked to scrutinise these and plug the unauthorised ones. This will help in reducing the number of accidents on the highway here,” said the Deputy Commissioner.

During his last visit to the area along with the Mohali SSP and other senior officials, the DC had issued several instructions in connection with repair of non-functional traffic lights at some points and closure of some vulnerable cuts on the highway.

It was nothing less than a shock for the top functionary of the district administration as the orders, issued then, were not followed.

“The traffic lights that were found non-functional then were still out of order. Even other orders were not followed by the local council and other authorities,” said sources.

When asked, the Deputy Commissioner said the lethargic approach of some officials was evident.

“I cautioned them. Strict action will be taken next time,” said the DC. Dayalan said he issued several other instructions regarding construction of service lane, which is missing or broken at several points along the highway.

“Apart from that, highway officials are told to ensure proper traffic signs on roads. We found several open sewerage drains on the roadsides. We asked the officials concerned to get these covered with immediate effect,” said the DC.

The DC told the NHAI officials to ensure proper traffic signs on roads and instructed the Drainage Department to cover open drains on the roadsides. On the issue of illegally connected sewer connections to the NH drain by several establishments, he said orders had been issued to identify these connections, cut them and penalise those establishments as per law.
