Kurukshetra, July 17

Rainwater accumulated in different parts of the district has started receding, with residents hoping that roads will be cleared by Thursday morning.

Residents of DD Colony, Kheri Markanda, Kirti Nagar, Layalpur Basti, Hira Nagar, Bishangarh and Gandhi Nagar are among the worst affected areas. At some places, roads have been dug up to make way for rainwater.

In this time of need, social organisations and restaurant owners have came forward to help affected families by providing them with food and water. Some organisations have set up community kitchens.

Municipal Council chairman Uma Sudha visited affected colonies to distribute food packets.

Bharatiya Kisan Union (Charuni) chief Gurnam Singh Charuni said, “Thousands of acres of paddy and other crops have been submerged. The state government should order a special girdawari as soon as water recedes so that farmers can be compensated immediately.”

Thanesar MLA Subhash Sudha, who has been monitoring the relief work, said: “Arrangements have been made at Jat Dharmashala, Ramgarhia Gurdwara Sahib and a government school in Gandhi Nagar for affected families. A team of doctors has been deployed in Kirti Nagar and free-of-cost medicines are being provided,” he said.
