Barnala, July 16

The district Health Department has topped the state in promoting family planning. State Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu honoured officials of the department during a state-level function in Chandigarh recently.

Dr Isha Gupta, a gynaecologist at the Civil Hospital, Barnala, was specially honoured as the best postpartum intrauterine contraceptive device (PPIUCD) provider doctor by the Health Minister for conducting 872 cases during 2018-19.

Barnala Civil Surgeon Dr Jugal Kishore said PPIUCD was a family planning method which was highly effective, reliable, inexpensive, non-hormonal, immediately reversible and long-acting contraceptive that could be initiated during the immediate postpartum period and it had no negative effect on lactation.

“PPIUCD also promotes the health of the women and children by preventing financial, psychological, obstetric and other health-related complications associated with pregnancies,” he said. — TNS
