A 32-year-old man died in custody of the cyber crime cell of the police last night. A magisterial inquiry has been launched into the case.

The incident took place around 8.30 pm yesterday when Sanjay Rai, a resident of Sector 22 here, was taken into police custody in connection with a case of cheating in life insurance policies. Sanjay had joined the probe around 5 pm and at 8.30 pm, the police informed his family that his had died due to some health complication.

His family members and some local residents met the police authorities today and accused the police of torture. However, ACP (Crime) Anil Kumar Yadav claimed that the deceased had not been tortured and the cause of the death was yet to be known. He said the exact cause of the death would be ascertained after the post-mortem report.

Sube Singh, police PRO, said Sanjay and his friend Rupesh were arrested last evening after Vicky, who had been brought from Delhi on production warrant, revealed their involvement in a Rs 29-lakh insurance policy scam.

He said a raid on Sanjay’s house on Sunday led to the recovery of Rs 1.55 lakh and some documents. He said while in custody, Sanjay collapsed and was taken to hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Sanjay, who was working as a private insurance agent, had been booked in five cases in Rai Bareli, Haridwar, Rohtak, Surajkund and Aligarh.
