Shopkeepers challaned for using plastic bags

A joint team of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation and the UT Administration inspected shops in the Vegetable and Grain Market in Sector 26 here to check the use of plastic bags.

The team issued more than 100 challans to shopkeepers, with a penalty maximum up to Rs 5,000, and confiscated plastic bags. During the raids, the team seized more than one quintal of plastic bags.

Dr Amritpal Singh, Medical Officer Health, said the motive of the civic body is to make the city plastic-free. He said general public carrying plastic bags will be challaned to enforce the ban properly in the city. The traders have been warned against using plastic and making encroachments in the market. — TNS
