Ropar, June 26

A large number of residents from several villages, including Ghanauli, Ghanaula and Lodhimajra, staged a dharna on the Nalagarh road protesting against the poor condition of the 2.5-km patch of road falling in the Punjab area.

The protesters sitting on the road near Ghanaula village under the banner of the Ilaqa Sangharsh Committee blocked traffic demanding immediate repair of the road.

Social activists Vicky Dhiman and Kuldeep Singh JE, addressing the gathering, said the road leading to Nalagarh had been in a bad shape for the last few years. This led to several road accidents, they said.

They alleged that despite repeated representations to the authorities concerned, nothing had been done to improve the condition of the road, which connected Punjab with Himachal Pradesh.

They lifted the dharna in the afternoon following the assurance by Tehsildar Kuldeep Singh that their meeting would be arranged with the Chief Engineer of the department concerned soon and potholes in the road would be filled with soil.

Others who addressed the gathering include Gurinder Singh Gogi, Bachittar Singh Saini, Gurcharan Singh Ghanaula, and Dr Davinder Bajar.
