Chandigarh, June 25

Violating environmental laws and regulations, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has started the Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste plant in the Industrial Area here without obtaining the mandatory consent from the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC).

Following the orders of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has started Construction and Demolition waste plant in the Industrial Area, Phase I, Chandigarh, on May 16 but it failed to get the nod of the CPCC under the environmental laws.

Sources said now the committee had directed officials of the Chandigarh MC to get the consent from it or face action as per the law.

Sources in the CPCC said consent of committee is required under Section 25 and 26 of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, Section 21 of the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981, and Rule 5 of the Hazardous Waste (Management, Handling and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2008, of the Environmental (Protection) Act, 1986 before starting production in any unit.

TC Nautiyal, member secretary of the CPCC, has confirmed that the plant was found running without taking mandatory consent from the CPCC. He said the issue had already been raised at the appropriate level.

MC Chief Engineer Manoj Kumar Bansal said the civic body has now applied for the consent before the CPCC.
