A total of 134 persons were challaned for drunken driving by the UT traffic police during last weekend. The violators were nabbed at the nakas laid in different parts of the city from June 21 to 23.
Police officials said a total of 2,469 challans have already been issued for drunken driving this year.
As per Section 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, offender of drunken driving will be punishable for the first offence with imprisonment for a term that may extend to six months, or with fine that may extend to two thousand rupees, or with both.
Police officials said driving licenses of all tipsy drivers would be recommended to the court for three-month suspension.
This year, the police have already recommended 3,193 DLs for suspension for different traffic violations, including drunken driving, speeding, using mobile phone while driving and jumping red light.
