Newly Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said on Friday that he would ensure that his work was transparent.
“This country has respected people who work transparently,” he said when he addressed the press as he took over his new responsibility as Speaker of Lok Sabha. "Be assured, Lok Sabha will function transparently," he said
He also said there was no need to doubt the election process.
He said: "All elections are transparent. Had it not been transparent, Janata Dal would not have won in 1977 after emergency".
He said he would work without bias.
“Everyone wants that the House should function without any hindrance,” he said.
Listing his priorities, he said he would work to enhance the House's dignity and advised members to abide by rules and regulations.
He said it was historic that 78 women had been elected to Parliament for the first time.
He said he hoped to engage with parliamentary proceedings in other democracies in the world and draw from their best practices to conduct Lok Sabha in a better way.
The new Speaker said he would like a mobile application for parliamentary procedures and rules to ensure that the House functioned smoothly, adding that he would ensure that, under his tenure, new MPs got a chance to speak.
Birla was unanimously elected to the chair on Wednesday.
