Reading month begins at District Library

AMRITSAR: Marking the National Reading Day and Reading Month celebrations, the District Library at Rani ka Bagh organised a reading programme with an aim to inculcate and promote reading habit.

Marking the National Reading Day and Reading Month celebrations, the District Library at Rani ka Bagh organised a reading programme with an aim to inculcate and promote reading habit. Under the National Reading Mission 2022 pledge, library will also host activities related to reading in collaboration with educational institutions, public libraries, panchayats and civil society to convey the message that reading is basic tool in living a good life.

The seminar was organised in collaboration with the District Education Office, Senior Secondary School. Mansi Singh, assistant professor, department of English, SR Government College for Women(SRGCW), addressed the seminar that had students and members of civil society in attendance.

“Books are a storehouse of our past, present and to some extent future. One can read till any extent and about any subject that is relevant to masses and our own development,” she said.

Dr Babita, senior librarian, SRGCW said, “Only human has power of reading to achieve higher state of mind. And books are the biggest facilitator in that process.”

Salwinder Singh Samra, DEO, said teachers were main facilitators to develop reading habit among students. He also elaborated on various activities that were being supported by the department of education to support and promote reading among students.

Dr Prabhjot Kaur, District Librarian, said the District Library had been organising various reading activities in schools and public library since 2017. “From today onwards the library will organise various reading related events till July 18,” she said.

Naresh Modgil, co-chairman of permanent lok adalat, said, “Reading as a habit is nurtured by public libraries. We need to develop more public libraries to make youngsters pick up books.”
