As nearly 100 days are left for the state Assembly elections, the Haryana Government has enhanced the monthly honorarium for chairperson of boards and corporations from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000 per month. The chairperson and deputy chairperson are affiliated to the ruling BJP.
Also, the sitting fee for non-officials, appointed as members of boards or corporations, for attending meetings, has been prescribed. Such members are also politically affiliated. The sitting fee for attending board or corporation meetings is Rs 3,000 and for attending other meetings it is Rs 1,500.
The enhancement in financial benefits has been notified after approval from the state finance department on June 3. The deputy or vice- chairperson will continue to get Rs 45,000 per month as honorarium. Some of the boards or corporations in the state are Haryana Bureau of Public Enterprises, Haryana School Education Board, Haryana Tourism Development Corporation, Haryana Agro Industries Corporation, Haryana Warehousing Corporation, Khadi and Village Industries Board, Haryana Seeds Development Corporation, Haryana Women Development Corporation and Haryana Backward Classes and Economically Weaker Section Kalyan Nigam. There are close to 30-40 such bodies in the state where either MLAs or persons affiliated to the ruling party are appointed.
The honorarium was last fixed in 2017. Besides the monthly honorarium, the chairperson and vice-chairperson enjoy a number of perks. Media Adviser to Haryana CM Rajiv Jain reasoned, “There has been a long-pending demand for a hike in honorarium. Even a clerk is getting Rs 50,000 per month.”
