The traffic wing of the police have deployed five special PCRs and three riders round the clock in a bid to reduce accidents on the 35-km stretch of the NH-44 in Panipat.

A total of 116 accidents had been reported on the stretch between Haldana, bordering Sonepat district, and Kohand, bordering Karnal district, in the last five months. A total of 56 persons had lost their lives and 83 injured in these accidents.

The 35-km NH-44 stretch falls under five police stations — Samalkha, Chandnibagh, City, Sadar and Sector 13/17. There is a traffic police station in Babarpur village on the NH-44.

A total of 31 cases had been reported on the NH-44 at the Samalkha police station till May, in which 17 persons lost their lives and 20 sustained injuries.

A total of 39 cases had been registered at the Chandnibagh police station, in which 18 persons were killed and 32 injured.

A total of 19 accidents had been reported at the Panipat City police station, in which seven persons were killed and 13 injured.

A total of 19 cases had been registered at the Panipat Sadar police station, in which 10 persons lost their lives and 13 sustained injuries.

A total of eight cases had been reported at the Sector 13/17 police station, in which four persons were killed and five injured.

In view of the number of accidents on the national highway, the district police had prepared a blueprint to reduce their occurrence. The traffic wing had identified accident-prone areas on the NH-44 where most accidents occurred.

The spots identified are the Ganjbar village turn, the elevated flyover, the turn from Nangal Kheri to Sewah village, the Police Lines road cut, the Machroli village road cut, the Samalkha road cut near Chhakkar petrol pump and the Patti Kalyana road cut.

Satish Kumar Vats, DSP (Headquarters and Traffic) said they had divided the 35-km stretch into five parts and deployed five special PCRs after every 7 km and three riders.

He said SHOs concerned and the SHO (Traffic) had been directed to challan owners parking their vehicles on the national highway and sensitise motorists.

He added that he had directed police personnel deployed on the national highway to rush the injured immediately to hospital so that lives could be saved.

No check on speeding

The traffic police have failed to check vehicles speeding on the NH-44. A traffic police official said on the condition of anonymity that they had only one interceptor, which had been condemned many months back. The DSP (Traffic) said they had sent a request for an interceptor and hoped that they would get it soon.
