Srinagar, June 19

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday paid tributes to renowned Islamic scholar Qazi Nisar Ahmad on his 25th death anniversary.

Mehbooba described Nisar as a noted religious scholar and political leader who had dedicated his life to get the state out of the cycle of chaos, uncertainty and conflict.

The PDP president said Nisar worked with earnest efforts for the uplift of downtrodden and weaker sections of society. “He was a noble soul and a leader with political astuteness. He battled against various forces very bravely and was a man with a genuine spirit of patriotism,” Mehbooba said.

Qazi Nisar of south Kashmir was killed on this day in 1994 at Dialgam on the outskirts of Anantnag town. He was a founding member of the Muslim United Front that contested the 1987 Assembly elections in the state. —TNS
