In a twitter post, actor Amitabh Bachchan revealed that he had ‘gifted’ 25 sewage cleaning machines and a truck to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
The actor said that he was “horrified” by incidents of manual scavenging.
Bachchan spoke of the donation in response to a news article which said that seven people had died while cleaning a septic tank in a hotel in Gujarat.
It was industrialist Anand Mahindra who had first tweeted about the Gujarat incident.
In the post, Mahindra spoke about an automated scavenging machine called the ‘Bandicoot’ which was developed by a group of students. Mahindra questioned why such technology wasn’t being adopted on a mass scale.
Bachchan responded to Mahindra’s tweet and said that he “never publicised it (the donation) because that is not the reason for the gift”.
