Residents of the local town and surrounding localities fear that sewage will overflow in low-lying areas in this rainy season. Courtesy: lack of preparedness on the part of the local civic body.

However, the local civic body has started taking proactive steps to minimise inconvenience to be caused to residents due to the collection of the rainwater in drains and streets.

The constant sewer overflow has always remained a challenge for the authorities, particularly during the rainy season.

Residents of the town say that defective layout of sewer drains and the apathetic attitude of the authorities are major reasons behind the persistent overflow of drains. They regret that the authorities, instead of making permanent corrective measures, are used to curtail the supply of drinking water during more sensitive days.

Investigation further reveals that the civic body has inadequate de-silting equipment and the lone sewer man is deployed for looking after the maintenance and upkeep of the sewerage system whereas four sweepers are waiting for confirmation by the department.

Residents have urged the authorities take remedial steps to check the overflow of sewerage, which leads to further problems like inadequate supply of water.

Justifying apprehensions and demands raised by the residents, Municipal Council president Suraaj Mohammad said the officials of the civic body should arrange adequate deployment of staff for the purpose and strengthen the sewerage system. “Besides seeking cooperation of officials of the municipal council, we have taken some proactive steps on the basis of past experiences and suggestions given by our elected members,” said Mohammad.
