Ludhiana, June 16

A man and his woman accomplice duped an Abohar-based man of Rs 15 lakh on the pretext of kidney transplant. The suspects have been identified as Bunty, a resident of Dholewal, and his woman accomplice, also from Dholewal. The police have arrested the woman.

The complainant, Manish Kumar, a resident of New Abadi, Abohar, told the police that he was suffering from a kidney ailment and undergoing regular dialysis at Dayanand Medical Hospital and College (DMCH). “About two years ago, he went to the hospital for dialysis where the suspects told him that they could arrange a kidney donor for him. They assured me that they would arrange all permissions from the government departments. They demanded Rs 25 lakh from me but the deal was finalised at Rs 15 lakh. I gave the amount to the suspects in instalments,” said the victim.

He alleged that the suspects also took him to Jalandhar and Chandigarh for various tests. However, they failed to get my kidney transplant done. The suspects used to take along a kidney donor to hospitals in Jalandhar and Chandigarh, just to make him believe that they were not cheating him, said Manish.

“The woman stopped taking my calls. Whenever I asked her to return my money, she threatened me with life. I had to sell my property and borrowed money to pay them Rs 15 lakh,” he said.

Manish got married in 2017. A month after his marriage, his kidney shrank and he had been undergoing regular dialysis since then. Now, he undergoes dialysis every 48 hours.

Meanwhile, the police did not divulge further details in the case. They expect unearthing of a big kidney transplant racket. An FIR was registered after the victim approached the Police Commissioner, Dr Sukhchain Singh Gill.
