Zirakpur, June 16
A Baltana resident fell prey to online fraud after Rs 48,000 was siphoned from his savings bank account.
The victim, Harbans Singh, said the fraud came to light when he checked his mobile phone on Sunday morning and was shocked to see text messages of three transactions in which Rs 12,000, Rs 24,000 and Rs 12,000 were withdrawn from his bank account.
The victim, in his complainant, had alleged that he offered to sell his refrigerator on OLX and he came in contact with a person posing himself as an Army man. He alleged that the person was interested in buying his refrigerator and asked him to send his account number in order to transfer the money.
The suspect told Harbans that he used only Google pay app and it would be easy for him to transfer the money. Trusting him, the victim got the app downloaded on his phone and shared his OPT number with the suspect.
It was at this juncture that Harbans realised that he had become the victim of an online fraud. He called bank officials and asked them to close his bank account. Meanwhile, the victim has also lodged a complaint with the Cyber Crime Cell, Mohali. — OC
