Abohar, June 16

The police here claimed to have seized 15,000 sedative tablets by intercepting Sukhchain Singh Sukha and Jaspreet Singh Jassa of Azamwala village. About 13,500 sedative tablets were seized from Rupinder Singh and his brother Jatinder Singh residents of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar here. Kashmiri Ram of Gidderanwali village was nabbed with 1070 sedative tablets.

Sub-Inspector Harbans Lal seized one kg opium from Mahabir Prasad of Morjand Khari village of Sadulshehar (Sriganganagar) near godown of LPG agency in Abohar Saturday evening. A case under the NDPS Act was registered.

Notably, Punjab had by and large succeeded in preventing poppy husk smuggling from Rajasthan after launching special awareness drive besides tightening vigil at the interstate borders in the past year. The states had shut licensed shops and banned its marketing or use in any form on March 31, 2016. But interrogation of paddlers nabbed recently indicated that medicinal drugs smuggling from Rajasthan to Punjab through Abohar area was making alarming strides. —OC
