Waterlogging at Sirki Bazaar during monsoon, potable water scarcity during summer and lack of parking space were the major issues for residents of Ward No. 30 ahead of the bypoll which would be held on June 21.
The Ward No. 30 includes major markets, including Sirki Bazaar, Kikr Bazaar, Dhobhi Bazaar, Bank Bazaar and can be termed a financial centre of the city.
Visitors usually find it hard to park their vehicles due to lack of parking lots. As a result, most of the vehicles can be seen parked in front of shops which cause traffic jam.
The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) candidate Munish Sharma (36) has been trying to woo young voters by questioning the Congress candidate Jeet Mal’s ability to perform due to his old age.
Both the candidates have been highlighting major issues impacting the residents during their door-to-door campaign, especially inadequate water supply.
Mal’s supporters were trying to send a message that voting for him would be a better deal as the Congress is at the helm of power in the state.
Mal’s son Arun Jeetmal Wadhwan is president of the Bathinda District Committee (Urban). The party has also promised to issue a separate manifesto for the ward.
The mood of workers at the Congress office was more upbeat then their opponents. While the Congress office has been equipped with a computer, features a map of Ward No. 30, the BJP office lacked such preparations.
