Lucknow, June 12

Twenty-six year old freelance journalist Prashant Kanojia walked out of Lucknow jail today, a day after the Supreme Court’s indictment of the Yogi Adityanath government for what it described as a “glaring case of deprivation of liberty”.

As per the apex court order, Kanojia was released on bail after furnishing two sureties of Rs 20,000 each and a personal bond for the same amount.

Kanojia stepped out of the jail wearing a T-shirt with “deshbhakt” (patriot) written on it. When approached, his wife Jigisha Arora said, "We will not like to talk today, will speak tomorrow."

The release came a day after the Lucknow’s Chief Judicial Magistrate sent an order to the Lucknow jail earlier in the day paving the way for his release.

Outside the CJM’s court, Jigisha Arora said she was satisfied with the SC order.

Arrested by the UP Police in mufti from his East Delhi residence on the morning of June 8, Kanojia spent four nights behind bars for sharing a video on the social media, which the UP Government claims was defamatory.
