The day-long strike called by All J&K Transport Welfare Association on Wednesday affected students who faced problems in reaching their educational institutes.

With no public transport plying on the road, the students had no option but to take lift from owners of private vehicles to reach their destinations.

“I had an exam today. It was to start at 10 am, but I reached the venue around 10.45 am,” said Anup, a student pursuing post-graduate course from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Jammu Regional Centre.

“Leave aside public transport, even the owners of private vehicles were reluctant to give lift. Even though I live in the Gandhi Nagar area and the examination centre was in the nearby Digiana area, I faced difficulties in reaching there,” he added.

“The educational institutes should have postponed the exams due to the strike. Not everyone has own conveyance. A majority of the students rely on public transport for reaching their institutes,” said Sunita Kumari, another student.

“The verification of documents is also going on in the colleges for admission and a number of students could not reach on time because of the strike,” said Madhav Sharma, who has passed Class XII.

“The students who were unable to reach the institutes have appealed to the college authorities to verify their documents on Thursday,” Madhav added.
