Aaditya Thackeray, son of Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, is likely to contest the forthcoming assembly elections in Maharashtra.

A final decision on Aaditya entering the poll fray would be taken by his father Uddhav Thackeray, senior party leader Sanjay Raut said here this evening.

“There is a demand from the people that Aaditya Thackeray contest the elections. But a final decision would be taken by his father and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray,” Raut told a television channel here.

Raut further added that in case of a coalition government of the Shiv Sena and the BJP being formed, Thackeray would not serve as deputy chief minister.

“A family member will not be deputy, only chief. The family has some prestige in Maharashtra and across the nation,” Raut said.

The first hint about Aaditya Thackeray entering the poll fray came from his cousin and party colleague Varun Sardessai who posted a message to the effect on Twitter.

“This is the time, this is the opportunity. Mission Legislative Assembly 2019. Maharashtra is waiting —Aaditya Thackeray,” Sardesai tweeted.

Amidst speculation that the 28-year-old would contest from either Sewri, Mahim or Worli assembly seats, members of his Yuva Sena at a workers meeting on Tuesday evening demanded that he announce his decision immediately.

“Aadityaji should contest the assembly election and take over as Maharashtra’s chief minister,” party workers chanted.

Sunil Shinde, sitting MLA from Worli, said he was ready to vacate the seat if Thackeray was willing to contest from this constituency.

On his part, Aaditya said a final decision on whether he would contest the assembly election would be taken by his father and party chief Uddhav Thackeray.

The young Shiv Sena leader, however, asked the youth wing members to register new voters in the constituencies of Mahim and Worli.

Booth-wise data about the votes polled by the Shiv Sena in the recently concluded assembly elections were analyzed.

“Party workers were told work towards increasing the Shiv Sena’s vote-share in the assembly elections,” senior Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai said.
