Residents of Baina Pur village, near Noormahal, sought polls to elect their sarpanch. They said the seat was reserved for scheduled caste woman candidate. However, the village does not have even a single scheduled caste voter. As a result, no nomination could be filed in December last year.
In a representation to the Jalandhar Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development), the villagers said the Punjab Election Commission had declared the office of sarpanch of their gram panchayat as vacant.
The block has 71 village panchayats, of which 70 villages had elected their sarpanches. However, sarpanch of gram panchayat Baina Pur has not been elected to date.
The Nurmahal block development and panchayat office has sent a report in this regard to the Department of Rural Development.
The ADC (Development) on December 13, last year, had said the administration wrote to the Chief Electoral Officer to issue a corrigendum in this regard.
Irate villagers said they had been facing problems in upgrading their Aadhaar cards and getting various projects approved in the absence of a sarpanch.
