A team of the detective staff has arrested a Havildar of the Army Medical Corps allegedly with 1.5 kg opium worth Rs2.5 lakh.

He was produced in court which has sent him to seven-day police remand as the police are yet to get information about the persons to whom he was going to supply the opium.

The accused has been identified as Akhil Dev, a native of Jharkhand who was appointed at Meerut, said Inspector Virender Singh Rana, incharge of the detective staff.

Rana said accused’s brother Ravi was also arrested under the NDPS Act three months back and now, he is on bail. Dev used to come here for his brother’s legal help. During his visit, he came in touch with several people and decided to smuggle opium from Jharkhand to Karnal, the incharge said. — TNS
