Mary in final, all-Indian final in 7 men’s categories

GUWAHATI:Six-time world champion Mary Kom overcame stiff resistance from Nikhat Zareen before winning 4-1 to enter the women’s 51kg final, while the Indian men dominated the ring by making it an all-Indian gold-medal clash in seven categories in the India Open.

Six-time world champion Mary Kom overcame stiff resistance from Nikhat Zareen before winning 4-1 to enter the women’s 51kg final, while the Indian men dominated the ring by making it an all-Indian gold-medal clash in seven categories in the India Open.

Continuing his dream run, Sachin Siwach registered an upset win over reigning Commonwealth Games champion Gaurav Solanki to set up the 51kg title clash against Asian Games gold medalist Amit Panghal. Panghal defeated national champion PL Prasad.

Shiva Thapa also remained on course for the gold medal as he fended off a strong challenge from Poland’s D Krystian Sczepanski to win 5-0. He will face Manish Kaushik in the 60kg final tomorrow.

In the men’s 75kg category, Manjeet Panghal twisted his knee in the first round to be knocked out by his Filipino opponent Eumir Felix De Los Santos. Santos will face India’s Ashish Kumar in the final. — PTI
