Overflowing sewers: MLA threatens to stage dharna

Infuriated over choked sewers on Rahon Road, Congress MLA from Ludhiana East, Sanjay Talwar, threatened to sit on a dharna with people if the problem was not addressed.

The MLA has raised the matter several times before the civic body, but to no avail.

Talwar said, “People had given an ultimatum that if the problem of choked sewers was not addressed, they would sit on a dharna. If the MC fails to resolve the issue, I would also sit with people on a dharna. I have also talked to the Mayor regarding choked sewers in the area.”

MC’s superintending engineer Rajinder Singh said they were going to serve notices on the dyeing units, which released more water than permissible limit into MC’s sewer line.

He said they were also checking sewer connections of the dyeing units on Rahon Road. If any unit is found releasing untreated waste, action would be taken, he added.

Rajinder Singh said they were making efforts to divert the sewer line to address the problem. They are also planning to lay a new sewer line in the area, he added. — TNS
