Former minister and MLA from Mandi Sadar, Anil Sharma, son of Sukh Ram could be in the BJP’s firing line as the party is likely to move a petition before Vidhan Sabha Speaker first for his expulsion from the party and later for his unseating as an MLA on grounds of anti-party activities.

Sources told The Tribune that immediately after the declaration of results of the parliamentary elections, the BJP will expel Anil Sharma from the party. This will be done so that he is no longer part of the BJP Legislature Party and is not entitled to attend the MLAs meeting. Later, the party will seek his being unseated before the Vidhan Sabha Speaker Rajeev Bindal.

Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur confirmed that the BJP has enough evidence to get him unseated under the Anti Defection law, which clearly indicates that Anil is bound to face the flak. “We have recorded telephonic conversation of Anil asking people to vote for his son, which could spell trouble for him as being BJP legislator, he cannot campaign for the Congress,” said a senior BJP leader.

Besides, the FIR that Anil Sharma got registered when messages on social media were posted on his behalf seeking votes for BJP candidate Ram Swaroop, is likely to be made basis of his being useated. “He will soon be expelled from the BJP which is not an issue at all but what we will do is to unseat him as being a BJP MLA he cannot campaign or have sympathy for a Congress candidate even if he happens to be his son,” remarked a minister. He said the BJP was prepared for the legal battle also.

Sharma was forced to resign from the Jai Ram government after his son Ashray Sharma got the Congress ticket to fight the Lok Sabha election from Mandi seat. He continues to remain a BJP MLA but refused to campaign for the BJP and against his son despite being asked to do so. Sukh Ram, Anil Sharma and his son Ashray had quit the Congress to join the BJP just before the 2017 Assembly segments and Anil had successfully contested the elections on the BJP ticket.

The equation, however, once again changed after Ashray decided to join the Congress when his request for being given the Lok Sabha ticket from Mandi was declined. In a major surprise, Sukh Ram and Ashray managed the Congress ticket, leaving Anil Sharma in the lurch. He tendered his resignation as pressure was mounted by the BJP on him to do so. He confined himself to home and neither did he campaign for the BJP nor his son openly.
