The colleges affiliated with Himachal Pradesh Technical University may lose affiliations if they fail to sign memorandum of understandings (MoUs) with at least five industrial or corporate houses. The university is learnt to have directed its affiliated colleges to sign MoUs before the next academic session.

Significantly, there are over 44 private and three government institutions affiliated with the university and it is observed that many of them are yet to meet the required specifications laid down by the university. The delay in the college meeting the prescribed standards has resulted in poor standards of education.

It is learnt that the HPTU has formulated a programme to rank its affiliated colleges and had set parameters in tune with those of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and National Institute Framework (NIRF) of the Ministry of Human Resource and Development of the Government of India.

It is learnt that the university has also planned to set up a digital studio, e-library, Research Hub and Tinkering Lab for the benefit of students studying in its affiliated colleges which would provide facility to improve the education and exposure to students but the project was hanging in balance following financial crises.

Notably, Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur had assured a grant of over Rs 100 crores for smooth functioning of the university. However, even after almost lapse of a year the funds were yet to be received.

The delay in the receipt of funds has further delayed the shifting of the university to its campus that was under construction for the last three years. The university is learnt to have planned to set up an ERP System network with its affiliated colleges to monitor the day to day working of the institutes but financial constrains were delaying the execution.

Prof SP Bansal, Vice Chancellor, said once the HPTU affiliated colleges sign MoUs with industrial houses, the standard of education and training would improve as the students would gain industrial exposure.

He said all efforts would enable students to make them employable. He said that the affiliation of colleges could be withdrawn if they do not adhere to the HPTU guidelines.
