Brace for traffic snarls, Pohir crossing closed for 3 days

Traffic management will remain an uphill task in the town and surrounding localities as the authorities at the railway station have announced to keep level crossing on the Pohir road closed during the day from Friday to Sunday.

Deep screening and packing of the gate at B-25 between Kilaraipur and Ahmedgarh railway stations has been cited as reason behind long closures of the railway crossing.

As the gate is the main passage for running of traffic on the Raikot-Khanna highway, heavy motor vehicles commuting on this route have to be diverted on alternative routes through the Pakhowal-Dehlon road and Sandaur-Malerkotla road.

Subdivision level traffic in-charge Kulwant Singh said the railway authorities had cautioned to keep gate B-25 on the Ludhiana-Dhuri railway line closed from 7 am to 6 pm from May 24 to May 26.

All officials concerned, including Ahmedgarh SDM Vikramjeet Singh Panthey, truck union, Ahmedgarh, and managers of various schools have been updated about the closure so that necessary action could be taken at their end.

Investigations revealed that residents of the town and surrounding localities commuting on the Pohir road and Jagera road had been a harried lot whenever level crossings on either of the roads were closed for repair work for long hours in the past.

The police had always remained on toes to tackle congestion caused due to U-turns and diversion of heavy vehicles through the already congested markets at the town.

The town witnesses heavy traffic during working days as a large number of buses visit localities to ferry students to various schools and colleges in Ludhiana, Malerkotla and Khanna daily. Big industrial units situated in nearby towns and city also ferry workers from the areas.

Traffic in-charge Kulwant Singh said the police had been advised to update staff accompanying heavy motor vehicles about the scheduled closer to avoid last moment problems.
