Security man, lecturer booked for ‘offensive’ posts

Kathua, May 21

The police have booked a paramilitary man and a contractual college lecturer for allegedly posting “objectionable” content on social media which had the potential to hurt the sentiments of a particular community.

According to the police, a paramilitary man, identified as Vikram Sharma from Hiranagar town of Kathua district, who is posted in Assam, was booked under Sections 153 and 295 of the RPC and Section 66 of the Information Technology Act for posting a objectionable remark on Facebook while reacting to an interview of Jammu and Kashmir Peoples’ Movement chief Shah Faesal.

An FIR has been registered against the paramilitary man at the Kathua police station.

In another incident, a contractual lecturer at Government Degree College, Kathua, Nazir Sheikh, who belongs to Kulgam district, was booked by the Kishtwar police under Sections 505 and 66 of the Information Technology Act for making a provocative statement on Twitter while reacting to the recent killings in Kishtwar district.

Meanwhile, Vishva Hindu Parishad activists, led by party leader Karan Veer, assembled at Chadwal Morh on the Jammu-Pathankot highway on Tuesday and held a protest against the controversial comments by Nazir Sheikh, demanding strict action against him. They warned that they would intensify the protest if the government did not take strict legal action against him.

Station House Officer, Kishtwar, Suraj Pathania and Station House Officer, Kathua, Arvind Sambyal said the police had registered a case and initiated action.
