Three cases regarding poll violence have been registered in Bathinda district.

In the first case, SAD councillor from Ward No. 7 Harpal Singh Dhillon and others have been booked for beating up a Congress worker at the DAV College polling booth.

In his complaint, Congress worker Satpal Singh, a resident of Jujhar Singh Nagar, said he had gone to his booth at DAV College where SAD workers Jagjit Singh of Model Town, Phase 3, Lalli Gill of Deep Nagar, councillor Harpal Dhillon and around 10 persons assaulted him.

A case under Sections 341, 323, 355 and 34 of the IPC has been registered against the accused. However, no arrest has been made so far.

In the second case, SAD workers were booked for entering into a scuffle with Congress workers and opening a fire outside an elementary school at Lal Singh Basti.

Complainant Gurjant Singh of Lal Singh Basti said he was working in support of the Congress at the booth along with others where accused Sukhmanpreet Singh, Sukhdev Singh, Davinder Singh, residents of Lal Singh Basti, Chamkaur Singh Mann of Sukhpeer road area, Kulwinder Singh, Pargat Singh, Jaspal Mangal and around 10 persons exchanged heated argument with them. He said all of them were SAD workers. The complainant said later, Sukhmanpreet opened a fire on them.

Kulwinder Singh is the son of SAD councillor Gurbachan Singh Khubban from the Lal Singh Basti area, while Chamkaur Mann is a former media adviser of Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal. Ahead of the polls, he joined the SAD.

A case under Sections 307, 148 and 149 of the IPC, Sections 27, 59-A and 54 of the Arms Act and Sections 130, 131 and 170-B of the RP Act, 1951, has been registered at the Canal Colony police station. Sukhmanpreet Singh was arrested from the spot, while others are still at large.

In the third case of poll violence at Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda (Rural) president of the Congress Khushbaz Singh Jattana and others were booked for beating up a SAD worker.

Complainant Jalour Singh of Talwandi Sabo, who was also a polling agent of the SAD, said Khushbaz Jattana, Darshan Singh Sandhu of Mannwala, Advocate Baba and Advocate Jassi from Chandigarh, councillor Aziz Khan of Talwandi Sabo, Amritpal Kaka, Dilpreet Jattana, Naseeb, Mangu, Harbans Singh, Jagdev Singh and others abused him and beat him up. He said the accused also opened a fire on SAD workers as well.

A case under Sections 307, 323, 324, 452, 354, 148 and 149 of the IPC, Sections 3 and 4 of the SC/ST Act and Sections 25, 27, and 59 of the Arms Act has been registered against the accused at the Talwandi Sabo police station. However, no arrest has been made so far.

A cross-FIR has also been registered in the case against SAD workers on the complaint of Ranjit Singh, personal assistant of Khushbaz Jattana.

In the complaint, Ranjit said at the polling booth set up in Ward No. 8 in Talwandi Sabo, Jalour Singh attacked him with a sharp-edged weapon and he fell down. He said SAD workers also assaulted him. Further, he added that former MLA Jeetmohinder Sidhu and a SAD leader opened a fire on him.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr Nanak Singh said, “On the complaint of a Congress leader, who was injured, a cross-FIR has been registered in the Talwandi Sabo firing incident against SAD workers.”
