Banker ends life, four booked

A banker, Manpreet Kaur, of Ranewali village committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance late on Saturday evening. She succumbed in a hospital on Sunday. According to information, she was upset over breaking of her engagement. The police have booked her fiancé and his family members for abetment of suicide.

Those booked were identified as Harman Singh, his father Manmohan Singh, mother Sukhwinder Kaur and his brother Damanpreet Singh, all residents of Dayal Bhatti village. No arrest has been made till now.

Simranjit Kaur, mother of the deceased, stated to the police that the girl worked with the SBI’s railway station branch. Manpreet was engaged to Harman Singh at a local gurdwara on January 14. She said her in-laws promised that they would send the couple abroad after marriage.

However, for the past few days the accused were not responding to their calls and started avoiding them. Manpreet also tried to talk to her fiancé, but in vain. A few days ago they came to know that Harman had gone abroad without telling her while his family also did not inform them about this. She said when they tried to approach them, they broke the engagement due to which her daughter was depressed. On Saturdayg, she consumed some poisonous substance and succumbed on Sunday.

Pargat Singh, investigating officer, said raids were on to nab the suspects while a case under Section 306 of the IPC was registered on the statement of Simranjit Kaur.
