Bravo, Pollard make it to reserve list

LEEDS: A retired Dwayne Bravo (in pic) has been included in the list of 10 reserve players by Cricket West Indies (CWI) for the ODI World Cup. Bravo had announced his retirement in October 2018. Kieron Pollard hasn’t played an ODI since October 2016.

Ashwin set to play six games for Nottinghamshire

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will be tuning up for the inaugural World Test Championship against West Indies by playing in English county for Nottinghamshire. The Committee of Administrators running the Indian cricket board had made it clear that any centrally contracted cricketer will have automatic rights to play county cricket, if that player gets an offer. Ashwin’s deal is almost final and only the BCCI CEO needs to sign his no-objection certificate.

Cricketer Jemimah spotted playing hockey

The Indian women’s cricket team’s young batting sensation Jemimah Rodrigues has been spotted trying her hands in the hockey field with her pet dog ‘Theo’, also earning appreciation from Hockey India. Posting a video of her on Twitter, the 18-year-old wrote, “A little bit of hockey on my day off with Theo, the ‘Goodest Boy’ in town!  #WhoLetTheDogsOut #dayoff.”  Later, HI tweeted: “Great dribbling skills, we’re open for trials!” Born and brought up in Mumbai, Jemimah played several sports, including hockey at the state level, before taking up cricket as her career.

India go into World Cup as the best bowling side: Rajput

Former India coach Lalchand Rajput believes the Virat Kohli-led side has the best bowling attack among the 10 teams to take part in the upcoming World Cup, making it one of the favourites for the 50-overs showpiece event. “I think India has got the best bowling attack and we have got a very well balanced team. We have got very good all-rounders and if we look at any other team, India is best equipped for that,” Rajput said. — Agencies

Stephen Curry saved 21 of his game-high 36 points for the second half and Draymond Green recorded a triple-double Saturday night as the Golden State Warriors rallied to stun the host Portland Trail Blazers 110-99 for a 3-0 lead in their Western Conference finals playoff series. The top-seeded Warriors, playing without Kevin Durant and DeMarcus Cousins, will go for the series sweep and a berth in their fifth consecutive NBA Finals on Monday night in Portland. For the second consecutive game, Golden State dominated the third quarter to get back in the game after trailing by double digits at halftime.

Wilder retains WBC heavyweight title  

Undefeated Deontay Wilder brutally knocked out Dominic Breazeale in the first round of their grudge match Saturday night to retain his World Boxing Council heavyweight world title. Wilder, who has one of the most destructive right hands in heavyweight history, floored the challenger with a one-punch knockout with 43 seconds left in the opening round. Wilder, 33, improved to 41-0-1 with 40 KOs in making the ninth defence of his title against heavy underdog Breazeale.

Marquez wins French GP, extends Championship lead

Honda’s world champion Marc Marquez won the French Grand Prix at Le Mans on Sunday for his third victory in the last four races to extend his lead at the top of the MotoGP standings.

The 26-year-old, who started in pole position, cruised to victory in 41 minutes, 53.647 seconds to reach 95 points for the season ahead of Andrea Dovizioso (87) and Alex Rins (75).

Marquez’s win was the 300th premier class victory for the Honda team and came 53 years after Jim Redman, of then Rhodesia, claimed the first one at Hockenheim.  — Agencies
