To lure voters and to make the voting experience “pleasant and memorable”, model polling stations were set up in the district under the aegis of the district administration.

These polling stations offered facilities for small babies to sit, for elderly to rest, medical facilities and toilets.

In Ludhiana, each Assembly constituency had 10 such model polling stations today.

Most of the model polling stations had good-condition buildings with nicely painted walls, decorated with balloons, and good furniture for the polling staff and agents.

These polling stations, different from other regular polling booths, impressed the voters who appreciated the efforts of the Election Commission for putting in such efforts.

Dr Neeru Katyal, ADC, Jagraon, who took care of all these polling stations, said total 140 model polling stations were set up in Ludhiana district. The minimum key features in these included drinking water, toilet and ramps.

“Apart from these, many polling stations had crèche for kids, volunteers and wheelchairs for needy/disabled. Voters have appreciated these stations,” she added.

Amanpreet Kaur, a voter at DAV School, BRS Nagar, which is a model polling station, said such polling stations were unique and eye-catching.

“Though we have to spend a few minutes here while casting vote, the efforts are tremendous. The administration has provided every basic facility here. I hope that from the next elections, we will witness only such polling booths,” she added.

Visitors said even police personnel on duty were very helpful. They came and guided from where to go and how to cast vote. “Look at the scorching heat outside. They are performing their duty diligently and are not rude to voters. Salute to their efforts,” said Kirti, accompanying her mother at the polling station.

Another voter at the model polling station in Raikot constituency said the entire area was decorated as if some party was going on.

“There was arrangement of drinking water, wheelchair and helpful attendants. There were balloons, flower arrangements, fans and everything. We feel like sitting here for sometime more,” he said in a lighter vein.
