Ludhiana, May 10
May 10 is observed every year as World Lupus Day. The day is observed to raise awareness about Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), a chronic auto-immune disease affecting multiple organs of the body. The theme for this year’s World Lupus Day is, “Let’s join together to fight Lupus”.
Dr Vikas Gupta, Assistant Professor in the Department of Rheumatology at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital said, “SLE, also known as Lupus, is a systemic auto-immune disease affecting skin, joints, kidneys, and other major organs of the body. It commonly affects young and middle-aged women, but can also affect men. Unfortunately, public awareness about this disease in India is very low.”
SLE can damage various organs. Some of the common symptoms of SLE are fever, skin rash, recurrent oral ulcers, hair loss, skin rash on exposure to sunlight. SLE can also affect kidneys, brain, and lungs, and can also be a cause of recurrent abortions among women.
