Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Wednesday accused the Shiromani Akali Dal of misusing the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) for political gains.

“Badals are misusing SGPC’s money for their political gains. I do not want to use religious issues, but I am a Sikh. I will support anybody who works to free SGPC from Badals’ political control,” said the chief minister said during a rally at Sangrur to support party candidate Kewal Singh Dhillon.

Dhillon filed his nomination papers on Wednesday. Capt did not accompany him to the local District Electoral Office (DEO) Ghanshyam Thori, instead presiding over a party meeting.

He touched upon failures of both Bharatiya Janata Party and the Aam Aadmi Party, but his focus was SAD’s interference in Sikh affairs. He accused SAD president Sukhir Badal of “summoning” Jathedars to his house for meetings.

“Both Sukhbir and his wife Harsimrat will lose these elections,” the chief minister said.

He accused the BJP of deliberately trying to “hamper his movement”.

“Last week, our party hired a chopper, but that was being used by a BJP leader in Udaipur. The leader is not releasing that chopper. But BJP leaders cannot prevent me from meeting the people of Punjab. I have begun using the road to travel,” he said.
