Over a month after he was granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, IGP Paramraj Singh Umranangal, an accused in the Kotkapura police firing incident of October 2015, on Monday appeared before the court of Judicial Magistrate (First Class).

As the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Punjab Police has not filed a charge sheet in the case, the court adjourned the hearing in the case to June 10.

After booking on an attempt-to-murder charge, the SIT had earlier arrested Umranangal on February 18 from the Punjab Police headquarters in Chandigarh.

He was granted bail by the District and Sessions Judge, Faridkot, on March 11.

He got relief four days after the Punjab and Haryana High Court had directed the state government and the SIT to give a seven-day prior notice in case Umranangal was required for interrogation in cases related to mob violence, firing at Behbal Kalan and other incidents of sacrilege.

Umranangal had approached the High Court after the SIT nominated him in the Behbal Kalan police firing case also. In this case, former Moga SSP Charanjit Singh Sharma has been in jail since January 27.

While the state has already challenged the relief to Umranangal, it also wants to curtail chances of default bail to the former Moga in the Behbal Kalan police firing incident.
