The residents of Jangpura Extension today held a protest against the recent spate of thefts and snatching-related incidents in the area.

Scores of residents from different parts of the posh southeast Delhi locality assembled outside the Jangpura Extension police post and raised slogans against the police for their alleged “apathy”.

“In the past 15 days, nearly 100 cases of snatching, houses burglaries and thefts of items like stereos, tyres and other accessories from vehicles have taken place but the police have failed to do anything,” fumed Kapil Kakkar, president of Jangpura Extension Residents Welfare Association.

According the past five years data, incidents of snatching have seen a spike and on average 18 cases are reported each day in Delhi which is a matter of concern.

In many instances, victims hardly bother to complaint to the police about the incidents. Many people living in Delhi often complain about feeling insecure while roaming in the city’s streets.

Keeping with the trends last year, cases of theft, burglary and snatching have not ebbed in 2019 either. However till March 2019, around 1,270 incidents were registered. According to a senior police official, out of which 649 cases have been solved and 888 snatchers were arrested till March 2019.

According to figures with the Delhi Police in 2014, something like 7,350 incidents of snatching were registered, in 2015, about 9,896 were registered, in 2016, around 9,197 were registered. But in 2017, roughly 8,070 incidents were reported while 6,642 were reported in 2018.

The data quantify that accused arrested for snatching 96.28 per cent were first time criminals.

According to a crime branch official, incidents of snatching are on rise and in majority of cases the modus-operandi same. In most of the cases snatchers are motorcycles as they find it easy to flee away.
