3-day-old gets police security over unintentional threat from mother

A three-day-old baby and its mother, who appears to have a very low IQ, have been given police security by the district child protection office after she stuffed the baby in a bag and tried to leave the hospital without informing the authorities.

Timely intervention of the hospital staff, who had seen the woman putting the child in a bag, along with clothes, helped save the boy. “As stated by eyewitnesses, the woman put the boy in bag and then put some clothes on the top of him before zipping the bag,” said District Child Protection Officer Manpreet Kaur.

According to her, the hospital staff and other patients have also seen abnormal behaviour of the woman as she tried to feed the child with chapattis and vegetable leaves. “She has also been seen handing a syringe with needle to the baby to let him play,” said Kaur, adding that the mother seems to be with a low IQ and has no consciousness about her family or whereabouts. She had given birth to the child at the railway station and was shifted to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital (GNDH) after she was spotted by a few passersby.

After receiving the report about the case, the DCPO office requested police officials to provide security to the child and his mother which has been provided.

“We have provided police security at the hospital on the request of senior doctors who fear that child might be stolen,” said Manpreet Kaur. She said the child needs care as he might catch an infection from his mother. The officer said that the duo would be cared for by the department.

At the same time, the department has requested people to provide any information about the woman or her family at 9592325526.

Manpreet Kaur has also urged people not to come up with adoption request as it is illegal. “Adoption request can be made only by registering at www.cara.nic.in,” she added.

Family details unknown

The woman, who was spotted by passersby while delivering a baby at the city railway station three days ago, has been admitted to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital. She is unable to give details about her family. Her behaviour is highly abnormal as she has been seen handing harmful objects, such as syringes, to her child. Once she stuffed the baby in a bag and zipped it, who was saved by hospital staff. Hospital staff fear that the child may be stolen. The district child protection office has urged residents to dial 9592325526 if they know anyone from her family.
